Houston Resident Wins Fifth Place
in
1998 Ms. Galaxy Fitness Semi-Finals Competition

August 31, 1998) Chris Cander, Houston
resident, won fifth place in the 1998 Galaxy Fitness Semi-Finals Competition
held August 14-17 in Columbus, Ohio. The Galaxy Fitness Competition judges
athleticism and femininity among 80 pre-qualified entrants completing
a 150-yard military-style obstacle course race and swimwear contest. To
finish the course in a remarkable 54.86, Cander trained for more than
four months under Coach Mark Lavespere, member of the Houston Police Department
SWAT team.
"I am thrilled with the opportunity
to represent Smoothie King, in the upcoming 1998 Galaxy Nova Championships.
Health and fitness are part of an overall balance in my life. By competing
in fitness events I have an opportunity to set and accomplish very high
goals for myself," said Cander.
Cander, a former firefighter for Katy, Texas,
will appear in an upcoming episode of the TV show, Baywatch. She
is currently a marketing program manager for Landmark Graphics Corporation,
the leading integrated information systems provider for the oil and gas
industry. Holding degrees with honors in French and Soviet Studies from
the University of Houston, she is a member of MENSA and has just completed
her first book. Her hobbies include single-engine aircraft flying, martial
arts, bungee jumping, and rock climbing.
1998 marks the Sixth Annual Galaxy Fitness
Competition, to be held at Redondo Beach, California on October 29, 1998.
The obstacle course includes a pair of over/under hurdles, a 16-foot cargo
net, a 10-foot rope wall, monkey bars, track-style hurdles, a 50-yard
sprint, a grid step, and a touch of a timer at the finish line.
